The internet treats cognitive functions like personality quirks: “Ne is brainstorming,” “Si is living in the past.” ART supersedes traditional Jungian typology entirely. The 16 MBTI archetypes are not mystical personalities — they are the 16 factory-default thermodynamic templates of the human brain: the closest geometric match to your 4 sliders.

The types above are factory default archetypes — 16 fixed reference points, the closest of which gets stamped as your label. Real humans are continuous variables. Someone can run genuinely high Ne and high Ni simultaneously and still get called ENFP or INFJ depending on which edge they sit closest to. The type is a compass reading, not a sentence. ART is the actual physics underneath it.

Before we redefine these 8 cognitive functions, let's look at how information in the brain is actually structured.

When your brain learns a new concept, it doesn't hand an empty neuron a name tag and say “Congratulations, you are now an Apple.” Memory is Distributed Representation — a specific combination of already-existing neurons firing together.

Looking at an Apple? Your brain activates a chain: Round shape → Fits in hand → Sweet taste → Found in kitchens → Red thin skin. The electrical connection of those five nodes is the Apple. There is no Apple neuron. There is only the chain.

An Orange shares nodes 1 through 4 with the Apple — because the brain is obsessed with energy efficiency, it reuses the exact same hardware. It only diverges at the end, skipping node 5 (red thin skin) and activating node 6 (thick, porous skin, citrus smell). The Orange is the same circuit, minus one node, plus one new branch.

Why this matters

This physical recycling is exactly why you can vaguely recalla forgotten memory, or why you sometimes call your teacher “Mom.” If nodes 1, 2, 3, and 4 fire together often enough, the electrical current naturally tries to jump to 5 or 6 just to complete the circuit.

The Guessing Engine — Path of Least Resistance

Someone says: “Think of something round that fits in your hand.” Your brain fires Node 1 and Node 2. The circuit is incomplete — and the brain hates an open circuit. The signal frantically searches outward for a connection to finish the thought.

It always follows the path of least resistance. The first thing you think of is simply the road that is most heavily paved and most recently traveled. If you've been eating a lot of fruit, the wire connecting to Node 3 (sweet) is physically the thickest. The signal takes that road and your brain confidently guesses “Apple!”

How your specific machine handles this guessing game — whether it builds fifty new dirt roads at once to test every possibility (Ne), or paves one massive superhighway to find the single most likely answer (Ni) — is dictated by your processors.

Every concept you know has a rank — here's how the ranking works

Imagine your brain as a massive, invisible leaderboard. Every concept you know — your favorite song, the layout of your bedroom, the smell of coffee, a mathematical formula — is a node on this leaderboard. The ones at the top (#1, #2, #3...) are concepts you use constantly. Because they've been fired so often, they require the least electricity to activate. This is why you never forget your own name — but completely blank on the name of someone you met five minutes ago.

Intelligence — The Perceiving Processors

Your brain runs on roughly 20 watts. That budget is finite. Every processor's strength comes at a direct, thermodynamic cost — the wattage funding one processor is wattage that cannot fund its opposing processor.

Common Myths

What the internet gets wrong about the 4 processors

Ni
MYTH

Ni is mystical. Ni users just "know" things. It's a crystal ball.

ART REALITY

Ni is Pruning — a Single-Core CPU that aggressively deletes ambient noise to drill into one root-level structural truth. Ni users predict the future not because they're psychic, but because if you prune away all irrelevant variables of a system, math dictates there is only one logical outcome left. It's calculation, not magic.

Si
MYTH

Si is tradition. Si is living in the past. Si is physical habits and routines.

ART REALITY

Si is Myelination — wire speed. It does not care if the wire is physical or mental. You can myelinate a golf swing, yes. But you also myelinate a 20-minute speech, a programming syntax, or a mathematical formula. If you run the same electrical current through the same path 100 times, Si insulates it permanently. Physical or mental — once myelinated, it executes with zero latency and zero conscious effort.

Ne
MYTH

Ne is why you have Autism and forget everything.

ART REALITY

Ne is Branching — and the internet is mostly right about its generative power. But Ne is not why you lose your keys. You lose your keys because of thermodynamics. To fund high Ne branching, the brain steals voltage from Se (the RAM Buffer). You don't have a "bad memory." You literally do not have enough active wattage to run physical sensors while your abstract generator is running.

MYTH

Se is living in the moment. Se is for jocks and party people.

ART REALITY

Se is the RAM Buffer — it dictates how many live neurons you can keep actively firing at the exact same millisecond. That data can be physical, but it can also be mental. High Se means you can hold six abstract variables in your head during a high-speed debate without dropping any. An ESTP (Se-Ti) uses that massive RAM to hold multiple arguments while staying emotionally detached. An ESFP (Se-Fi) uses the same RAM, but with a blown Fi gate — they absorb the raw emotional voltage of the room instead. Same hardware, completely different software.

Brain Quotient

IQ only tests two processors. You have eight.

The IQ Problem

IQ tests measure Ne and Ni exclusively— lateral branching speed and convergent pattern pruning. That's it. If you're a high-Se kinetic genius who can rewire an engine in the dark, or a high-Si master practitioner who has myelinated decades of skill — IQ says nothing meaningful about you.

What BQ Measures

Brain Quotient accounts for all 8 processors — your raw wattage across the full architecture. A master chef's Se. A therapist's Fe. A general's Ni. None of these appear on an IQ test. Your BQ is your thermodynamic signature, not a score on a standardized bell curve.

The brain runs on a finite ~20-watt battery. Powering one processor inherently starves its thermodynamic opposite. The Ne genius who sees connections everywhere is burning the exact same wattage that an Se athlete uses to track a moving ball. Neither is “smarter” — they are running different microarchitectures with different trade-offs baked into the hardware. This is not metaphor. This is thermodynamics.

The Software

Emotions — The GABA Logic Gates

You do not have a magical “emotion generator.” You only have Brakes — the Executive Command Center stopping raw voltage from frying your limbic system. Feeling is simply the uninhibited state of the human furnace when those brakes are broken or missing. The Brakes do not only control how intensely you feel — they control what you are willing to believe. A heavy Ti gate rejects even a logically sound argument if it doesn't spike hard enough against your existing hierarchy. A leaky Fe valve accepts unverified social data simply because it was present in the room.

A heavy, fast-acting block. Demands a massive, concentrated spike of internal logical relevance to open. Cortically: rejects a widely accepted theory for one microscopic flaw. Limbically: feels nothing during normal conflict, but explosive connection when an action perfectly aligns with core principles.

The spike must agree with the top #1-10 node at the top of your Leaderboard — your dominant internal concepts.

Pressure Valve

A sluggish, sustained filter. Only opens under repeated, consistent, externally validated confirmation. Cortically: ignores a brilliant theory with no real-world track record. Limbically: unmoved by grand gestures, but falls deeply for small, reliable, daily actions compounding over time.

Agreement must come from a large volume of neurons — many nodes confirming across time, not a single strong spike.

Brakes with broken springs — voltage passes unchallenged into the emotional core. Cortically: no amplitude gate — every idea, impulse, and value signal blasts through without interrogation; the baseline threshold is on the floor. Limbically: the smallest, lowest-voltage event triggers a massive concentrated spike directly into the furnace. Cries at a dog food commercial. Forms a deep bond with a stranger's cat in 30 seconds.

No agreement required. Gate is structurally broken — voltage enters the emotional core unchallenged.

No Frequency Filter
Leaky Pressure Valve

Ambient social energy floods in continuously without resistance. Cortically: zero sustained resistance against incoming data — cannot apply the prolonged barrier needed to filter isolated signals from the environment. Limbically: no repeated exposure needed — one interaction, one shift in energy is enough to flood the system. The Mirror Neuron System runs wild; their body vibrates with voltage that isn't even theirs.

No volume threshold. The valve leaks at all times — social and emotional input floods in continuously.

The Dampening Effect — The Volume Dial

The Brakes do not just act as binary locked doors. They are physical dampeners — they control the volume of reality. When a Level 100 event happens in the room, a heavy Ti or Te user's Brakes instantly deploy resistance, actively bleeding the electricity out of the signal. By the time that Level 100 event pushes through the armor and reaches their core, it has been mathematically reduced. It hits their furnace as a 50, a 20, or simply fades to 0. They physically experience a quieter, dampened reality.

But what happens to a machine that doesn't have the ability to turn the volume down? Fi and Fe users don't dampen — the Level 100 event arrives at Level 100. The furnace receives full voltage, uncut.

The Bridge — How Brakes Interrogate Hardware

The Brakes (Ti/Te) sit between the Hardware processors (Ne/Ni/Se/Si) and the Dopamine budget. Before the brain authorizes funding for any thought or action, raw voltage from the Perceiving processors must pass interrogation. High Ti means only a perfectly relevant logical spike gets approved. High Te means the idea must have confirmed correct repeatedly over time. Fi and Fe are Brakes with broken springs — voltage passes through unchallenged, straight into the emotional core.

The Engines

Dopamine, Drives, and the Budget

Fuel Drive

Food, resources, security. The baseline survival engine. Everything wired to physical comfort, scarcity, and provision.

Propagation Drive

Status, mating, social hierarchy. Drives approval-seeking, attraction, competition, and the need to matter to other humans.

Threat Drive

Safety, unknown, danger. The fear engine. Fires on anything that signals unpredictability, loss of control, or existential risk.

Dopamine — The Budget Currency

Dopamine is not a “happiness chemical.” It is the brain's strict chemical budget — the literal funding that authorizes memory-burning, learning, and the motivation to pursue anything at all. Every thought, every craving, every hyper-fixation must earn its dopamine allotment by surviving the Brakes first.

You don't remember lyrics because you tried hard. You remember them because your brain paid you dopamine to save them. Everything you value is just an abstract idea with a wire running to one of the three drives — and Dopamine is the currency that converts that wire into a permanent memory.

Addiction & Saturation

How your Brakes determine what you obsess over — and what burns you out

The same dopamine budget behaves completely differently depending on whether your Brakes are heavy or broken. Two people can love the same thing — and have completely opposite experiences of it.

Heavy Brakes — Ti / Te

Node-Specific Addiction

High Ti or Te blocks almost everything. 99% of your Leaderboard is dark and unfunded. Because the system is generally starved of dopamine, when a node finally survives the interrogation — a niche intellectual subject, a complex strategy game — the brain refuses to let it go.

Because the Brakes regulate dopamine into a steady, pressurized drip, the node rarely saturates. Instead, the brain weaponizes Si to pave that single node into a flawless, zero-resistance superhighway. This is why heavy Thinkers can grind one repetitive skill or formula for ten years straight without getting bored. The node never gets enough to flood.

Broken Brakes — Fi / Fe

Node-Specific Saturation

No regulation means no drip — dopamine drops like a tsunami. When a new node strikes the core, the rush is biologically unsustainable. Two things break immediately:

  • 1.Construction Failure: The flood is too high. The system is so overwhelmed by the euphoric rush that Hardware loses the focus required to save data. You jump around your room thrashing to your new favorite song — and when it ends, you won't remember the dance steps. Too high on the budget to do the construction work.
  • 2.Meltdown: The brain triggers emergency Receptor Downregulation on that exact wire. Local sensors swallow themselves to survive the flood — unplugging the connection entirely.

An Fi or Fe user will listen to a new song on repeat 500 times in two days — then wake up on day three feeling physically sick at the thought of hearing it again. The node was flooded, the brain cut the power to survive, and they are physically forced to find a new node just to get the high back.

The irony: Feelers experience peak biological highs far more often than Thinkers — but they can never hold onto them. Thinkers experience fewer highs but own them permanently. Neither is superior. Both are architectural consequences of the same dopamine budget with different regulatory hardware.

The Flow

How a thought becomes a memory — or doesn't

The Blank Slate

Born with an empty leaderboard. No nodes, no abstract concepts. Only raw sensory alarms: taste, pain, warmth. First sweet taste → Fuel Drive fires → first node is born.

The Wire Is Built

Builders (Ne/Ni) cast abstract connections between existing nodes. Ne grows a wide, lateral web. Ni tunnels a deep, narrow shortcut. Neither one decides what gets saved — they just build the path.

The Brakes Interrogate the Wire

The new connection hits the Executive Command Center (PFC). Ti asks: "Is this relevant — does it spike hard enough internally?" Te asks: "Has this confirmed correct externally, repeatedly?" If NO → GABA drops. Wire is choked out. You feel nothing.

The Ego Wire Check

Even a logically valid idea gets no funding until it touches YOU (Self-node). The Default Mode Network evaluates: "Does this benefit my survival?" It must connect to a Drive — Fuel, Propagation, or Threat. Brilliant idea that doesn't touch your ego = intellectually interesting, emotionally hollow.

Dopamine Fires

VTA releases dopamine into the cortex. The budget is authorized. Your Burners activate — Se flash-burns the experience, Si insulates the road with myelin.

The Memory Is Built

Long-Term Potentiation (LTP) strengthens the connection permanently. The more dopamine, the faster and deeper the insulation. The emotion you feel IS the dopamine hitting the Self-Node.

The Dopamine Checklist

Five gates — miss one and the funding is cut

Every single dopamine hit — every craving, every hyper-fixation, every romantic spark, every addiction — must survive all five of these in order. The brain releases fractional advances as each gate clears — a spark at 1–2, a rising craving at 3–4, a full phasic burst at gate 5. That ramping feeling of building excitement is dopamine, not willpower.

Playing a video game you've already beaten 5 times. You know exactly how it ends — brain refuses to pay you.

Receptor downregulation. Node is chemically deaf. The high is physically denied.

Real-world example

Your new favorite song after 60 plays in two days. Suddenly it just sounds like annoying noise.

When the ramp crashes mid-sequence — like realizing gate 4 just failed because you've played this game for 200 hours — the funding pulls instantly. The craving vanishes. You drop the project cold for no reason you can articulate.

Cognitive Disparities

What happens at the extremes

Genius
High Ne + High Ni

Rapid multi-core branching combined with instant single-core pruning to the absolute core truth. Broad input, clean output. Exceptional cognitive bandwidth.

Autism / Chaos
High Ne >> Ni

Ne vastly outweighs Ni. The brain grows a chaotic web of branches, splintering voltage. Thoughts fragment. Cannot maintain a linear path. The generator runs but the compiler never finishes.

Schizoid / Rigid
High Ni >> Ne

Ni vastly outweighs Ne. Obsessively fixated on single concepts. Reads too deep into simple things to find 'hidden truths.' The pruner deletes so much context that reality begins to look like a conspiracy.

ADHD
Chronic Dopamine Deficiency

Not a branching disorder — a budget shortage. Common in high Ti architectures (gates too strict to authorize most nodes) or over-saturated Fi (Leaderboard flooded, receptors downregulated). The node engine is intact. The budget is structurally deficient.

The Extended Self

What gets wired to you — and why it hurts when it's gone

You already know the rule: higher brakes = harder for anything to reach your core. Lower brakes = easier. That same rule applies to who and what gets wired into your Self-Node. Stop thinking of your “Self” as a magical box sitting in the center of your brain. It is a sprawling, invisible network. Your memories, your mother, and your favorite mug do not live inside the Self-Node — they exist as scattered files out in the cortex. They only become “You” when your hardware successfully solders a permanent wire from those external files directly into the network. Low brakes? Highly porous — things wire in fast, deep, and often. High brakes? Armored — most things never get wired in at all.

The Mic Drop

The voltage trade-offs are literal thermodynamics.

The Vault Door is a real GABA-A ionotropic receptor. The Pressure Valve is a real GABA-B metabotropic receptor. The Dopamine Checklist maps 1-to-1 onto the ACC, the DMN, the VTA, and clathrin-mediated endocytosis.

The framework tells you what the machine does. The machinery tells you why it can't do anything else.

Where This Applies

ART is not a personality quiz — it is a root operating system

Once you understand the hardware, the software, and the dopamine budget, you stop seeing behavior as personal and start seeing it as architectural. Below is a partial list of domains where this framework has direct, non-trivial implications.

Psychotherapy. Diagnosing emotional dysregulation as a Brake architecture problem, not a character flaw.
Couples Counseling. Why two people experience the same event with completely different emotional weight.
Parenting. Calibrating emotional thresholds and dopamine budget for each child's specific wiring.
Education Reform. Redesigning curricula around the 8 processors — not every mind learns the same way.
Team Architecture. Placing people in roles that match their dominant processors, not their credentials.
Leadership Profiling. Distinguishing Ni strategists from Te executors from Fe consensus-builders.

Conflict Resolution. Diagnosing why two parties cannot agree — often a Brake mismatch, not a values mismatch.
Romantic Compatibility. Thermodynamic pairing — why certain pairings feel effortless and others feel like friction forever.

A Note for the Perceptive

If you read carefully enough, you will recognize that everything above — the thermodynamics, the drives, the dopamine budget, the Leaderboard — is the mechanical root of the applications and theories explored in The Dao of the Psyche. The physics came first. The philosophy is what you do with it.
